U of L Swim for Ped's Greatest Needs
University of Lethbridge Sport and Recreation staff are jumping in the pool to raise money for pediatrics at Chinook Regional Hospital. From March 17th to April 11th they will be tracking the swimming distance of participants and tallying group totals on two ‘Swimometers’; one placed poolside at Max Bell and the other at the Sports & Recreation customer service desk.

The hospital vendor program at the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation has brought staff, patients and visitors a variety of items for sale including: books, ceramics, pottery, photography, soaps, lotions, jewellery and hand-made crafts. In addition to bringing unique and wonderful items into the hospital, a minimum of 20% of each sale supports the CRH Foundation to purchase equipment, supports programming and special projects at the hospital.

Kathy Van Den Elsen got the surprise of her life Friday. Donated Fun Centres Helps Take Cares Away For Young Patients
Two portable Nintendo Fun Centres for playing movies and games arrived on pediatrics last week and are already in popular demand by young patients. Donated by the Lethbridge Community Foundation and Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, the Fun Centres help relieve the boredom of a hospital stay while also distracting a child from the seriousness and discomfort of their illness or injury.

Donated Funds Purchase Special Tub for Geriactric Rehabilitation Unit
Having a bath or shower can be therapeutic and it's the most pleasurable way to take care of personal hygiene. Now, GARU Unit 5A, Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit, has a brand new deluxe tub that seniors and staff enjoy, thanks to the generosity of many donors to the Foundation's Telethon and Lights of Hope campaigns. Foundation Board members were given a chance to see the new tub Wednesday prior to their regular board meeting.

Through a number of fundraising initiatives, staff and customers at Lethbridge Costco Wholesale have raised an impressive $81,836 to support health care needs in our city. On Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 Costco presented a cheque to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. This donation was part of the Care from the Heart Telethon and was raised through a variety of events held at the Lethbridge Costco location. The Toonie at the Till program, corporate donations, raffles and Krispy Kreme sales all contributed to the donation.

Costco Wholesale will be supporting of the 2007 Care From the Heart Telethon and the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation through the sale of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. The doughnuts will be available in the Chinook Regional Hospital Atrium on Friday, May 4th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. They will sell for $8.00/dozen with a portion of the proceeds coming directly to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation for priority equipment needs.

Foundation Chairman Tom MacLachlan Thanks Volunteers, Entertainers and Donors For Outstanding Telethon
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the residents of southern Alberta for their outstanding financial support of the 16th Annual Care from the Heart Telethon held this past Sunday. Donations and pledges exceeded $953,000, far surpassing the Foundation’s $800,000 goal. A significant portion of these proceeds will be directed to the $1.5 million i-Suite Project, for constructing and equipping two state-of-the-art operating rooms. Although we still have some ways to go toward the $1.5 million target, the funds received to date have given the health region the confidence to proceed with construction in July.

Telethon Sunday Is Here! Please Give: For the Best of Health
The 16th annual Care From the Heart Telethon airs live from the stage of the Yates Memorial Centre on SHAW TV channel 12 Sunday, April 29 from 11 am – 9 pm. The community is invited to come to the Yates during the day to take in wonderful entertainment, watch the live interviews and cheque presentations, and drop off their own donation to the hospital if they wish. More than 200 community volunteers have been organized to make the Telethon happen, including 70 phone operators, more than 150 live southern Alberta entertainers, and lots of backstage staff. John and Irene Frouws Donate $50,000 For Care from the Heart Telethon
John and Irene Frouws of Lethbridge have donated $50,000 to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation to enhance surgical services at the Chinook Regional Hospital through development of the i-Suite Project. Mr. Frouws, a City of Lethbridge employee for 38 years before retiring in 1976 as transit superintendent, says the donation is his way of “giving something back to the community which has been very good to him and his family.” Mr. Frouws and his wife Irene, who has been receiving nursing home care the last few years, are long-time supporters of the Foundation, contributing each year to the annual Care from the Heart Telethon that runs Sunday, April 29.

Cor Van Raay Surprises Foundation With Second $100,000 Donation!
The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation was prepared and pleased to announce today a gift of $100,000 to launch the public phase of the i-Suite Project to create two highly advanced, high-tech surgical operating rooms. Cor Van Raay, a farmer and feedlot operator from Iron Springs, made the gift to help bring the i-Suite Project to the Chinook Regional Hospital as quickly as possible. But this morning, he did a lot more. Mr. Van Raay brought with him a second cheque, and to the delight of Foundation Board members, he made it out for another $100,000.

The Pepsi Bottling Group contributed $287.50 in proceeds from the Sunday, March 11 game to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. Centre Villiage Mall donates proceeds from Photos with Santa campaign
The wonderful staff of the Centre Village Mall decided to donate all earnings from their Photos with Santa campaign to the Foundation. Photos were taken free of charge through December but the public was asked to make a donation in any amount to the Foundation. The campaign ended up raising $4,382 which will benefit the Pediatrics unit at the hospital.

The Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation was the grateful recipient of a $2,000 donation recently, the result of many fundraising activities over several months by members the Order of the Eastern Star Maple Leaf Chapter #7. Duck Toss totals fly high

Hospital Mourns Passing of "Inspirational" Nurse, Dolores Brown
The LRH Foundation sadly announces the passing of Dolores Brown, R.N., B.N. who nursed at the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital and then the Lethbridge Regional Hospital from 1967 to 1991. In the tribute message that follows, friend and former co-worker Ingrid Dawson writes, "This outstanding caregiver has been throughout the years an inspiration to our Nursing Staff, Physicians and Administration....".

Val Matteotti Italian Open Raises $65,000 for Medical Equipment
The 11th Annual Val Matteotti Italian Golf Open held Wednesday, August 9 at the Lethbridge Country Club raised more than $65,00. This brings the total raised by the tournament in its 11-years to $580,000. The funding has purchased medical equipment for the NICU, Emergency, Cardiac and Stroke programs, Surgery and Cancer Diagnostic Services at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital.

We Care Saves for Little Hearts campaign tops $10,000 in contributions to NICU
The first night of the Hurricanes playoff season began with a generous gift to the LRH Foundation on behalf of the We Care Saves for Little Hearts campaign. We Care Home Health Services donates one dollar to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit for every save a Hurricanes goalie makes during the regular season. The 2005/2006 save total turned into a big cheque for $2,093. The We Care Saves campaign has raised $10,523 to date since it began during the 2003/2004 season.

It was quite a sight to see some 800 ducks fly at the Lethbridge Hurricanes game Saturday as the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation partnered with We Care Home Health Services to raise funds for the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Spectators purchased rubber ducks at $2 each and tossed them toward centre ice for a chance to win a $500 grand prize package.

Ladies of the Auxiliary to the Lethbridge Regional Hospital were on hand Tuesday, Nov. 15 to launch their 11th Annual Lights of Hope campaign. The roar of Harleys could be heard from blocks away as the 7th Annual Teddy Bear Run made its way to the LHR on Sunday morning. Maria Malcolm, child life specialist for the CHR, and her volunteers waited anxiously in the north parking lot as dozens of shiny bikes pulled up, decorated with stuffed toys of every shape and size.

Palliative Care Team Says Thanks For Donation
The LRH Foundation's Finance committee ensures that the valued contributions by donors are used in keeping with their wishes and for equipment and programs that will enhance care. The Palliative Care Team recently wrote the Foundation the following note to express their gratitude for a funding allocation to buy Oximeters that measure oxygen levels in the blood.

ENMAX Suite Auction rasies $1,200 for the LRH Foundation
A $1,200 cheque was presented to the LRH Foundation from ENMAX Corporation and local radio stations Country 95.5 and B-93. An ENMAX Suite was auctioned live on-air during the Country 95 and B-93 morning shows to raise funds for the Foundation.

Odd Fellows Add $10,000 To Eye Care Fund
A $10,000 gift was received in late December from the Odd Fellow Rebekah Visual Research Foundation of Alberta. The gift will be added to a $30,000 endowment fund started at the hospital in 1995.

19th Annual Moonlight Run tops $60,000 to LHR Foundation
Through the cold winter night, through the wind and the snow, hundreds of dedicated runners crossed the finish line of the Moonlight Run on Saturday. The 19th annual run, organized by The Runner's Soul, is one of the biggest races in the province and has contributed more than $60,000 to the LRH Foundation over the years.

More than 30 shiny motorbikes roared up to the front entrance of the LRH with Santa leading the way. The Prairie Wind Riders motorcycle club, led by Bruce Mathieu (Santa), delivered a $3,500 cheque along with armfuls of new toys for the Pediatrics unit.

Annual Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie campaign
Local Tim Horton’s stores and the LRH Foundation sold a lot of smiles this summer during the annual Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie campaign. The delicious jumbo chocolate chip cookies were sold for $2 each during a week in June and raised $3015 for the LRH Foundation.
